2021 Daily Devotion - Day 430
Being a servant – it’s one of the most neglected things in the contemporary church. In fact, there's a very apprehensive attitude in many people about the idea of being a servant.
What does the Bible say about being a servant? First of all, servanthood is divine, and eternal. It didn't start with humanity, it started in God. It didn't start in time, it started in eternity. There are three persons in the Godhead: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And the Son is a servant of the Father, and the Spirit is a servant of the Son and the Father.
Matthew 12:18
“Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased.” (This is God the Father speaking. Who was God’s servant? Jesus.)
Revelation 13:8
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the Book of Life of the Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world. (a sacrificial servant)
Matthew 20:28
…just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (That's the spirit of Jesus. He does not come to be served. He comes to serve.)
In John 14:16-17, Jesus told his disciples, the Father is going to send as His servant, the Holy Spirit.
So, servanthood is in the nature of God Himself. Being a servant is one of the most-godly things you can ever be. It doesn't mean you're inferior or second rate. It means you're following a divine pattern.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, please open the eyes of our understanding to see servanthood as You do. Show us our self-serving attitudes and strengthen us to serve the Body of Christ, and the lost world. In Your holy name. Amen.
