2021 Daily Devotion - Day 390
In the binge worthy TV show, “Friends”, there is this amazingly funny storyline that emerges when Rachel and Phoebe decide to go running together. Phoebe ties up her laces, and Rachel takes off ahead for her run. Then we see Phoebe run to catch up with Rachel in her “cross between Kermit the Frog and the Six Million Dollar Man” run as she yells, “Come on! That’s not running! Let’s go!”
Rachel is so embarrassed by Phoebe’s childlike run that she makes excuses not to run with her anymore. Then while out for a secret run from Phoebe, Rachel is caught and confronted. Phoebe explains to Rachel the joy of running like a child, “I run like I did when I was a kid. Cause that’s the only way it's fun. Didn’t you ever run so fast you thought your legs were going to fall off? Like you were running towards the swings, or running away from Satan...the neighbor’s dog.”
By the end of the episode, Rachel finally gives it a chance, and runs like a child through Central Park. Then with arms flailing, she jumps with joy when she sees Phoebe running too and exclaims, “This feels great!”
Matthew 18:1-4
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Do you remember what it felt like to run like a child? We didn’t worry about tripping over the curbs or skinning our knees on the asphalt.
Jesus is calling us to a faith like that of a young child running, to completely trust Him and to lay aside every weight and sin that clings to us and to just run. Run with endurance only the Father can give. Run wild as a child of God; fully trusting, fully vulnerable, and fully reliant on Him! When we live out this humble childlike faith, we too, will be able to exclaim like Rachel, “This feels great!” as we run in the joy of His salvation.
Pray with Me:
Dear Gracious Father, give me the humility of a child. Help me to trust You like a child, be vulnerable with You like a child, and help me daily to be fully reliant on You. Give me the courage to run like a child in my faith each and every day. Thank You for being a perfect Father I can run to each and every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
