2021 Daily Devotions - Day 366

Two young engineers applied for a single position at a computer company. They both had the same qualifications. In order to determine which individual to hire, the applicants were asked to take a test by the department manager.
Upon completion of the test, both men missed only one of the questions. The manager went to the first applicant and said, "Thank you for your interest, but we’ve decided to give the job to the other applicant."

"And why would you be doing that? We both got 9 questions correct," asked the rejected applicant.

"We have based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed," said the department manager.

"And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?" the rejected applicant inquired.

"Simple," said the department manager. "Your fellow applicant put down on question #5, ‘I don’t know.’ You put down, ‘Neither do I.’"

One of the very important lessons we must always remember is that when we fail to do what is right, we always get caught. We often teach this to our children and then forget about it ourselves. Or some get stuck in denial and think no one will ever know, but they do. This is what Moses was trying to tell the people he was leading:

Numbers 32:23 NRSV
But if you do not do this, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.

This is why repentance is so vital to our lives. It helps to keep us from living a “secret life” because we are being honest with God and asking Him to not only forgive us, but also to give us His grace and strength to stop doing the things that break His heart.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, sometimes in our pride, we think we can ignore doing what You have asked us to do and no one will know. But it seems like we always are “found out”. Because of the Cross of Jesus, forgive us and give us Your grace to go in a new direction. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Yours because of Him,
Pastor John R. Steward
