2021 Daily Devotion - Day 346

The story is told of the teenager who loses a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he tells his mother the lens was nowhere to be found. Undaunted, she goes outside and, in a few minutes, returned with the lens in her hand. “I really looked hard for that, Mom,” says the youth. “How’d you manage to find it?”

“It’s easy,” his mother replies. “We weren’t looking for the same thing. You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for $150.”

God feels the same way about you. You are incredibly valuable to Him. And if you are lost or far from Him, He will search for you until He finds you and restores you to Himself. He is unrelenting in this endeavor. And so, in this Lenten season, you need to remember God’s desire is to have a deeper relationship with you. To Him, you are of more value than anything else He has created. He proves it in the cross of Jesus.

Ezekiel 34:11 NRSV
For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, sometimes we forget just how valuable we are to You. Help us to realize the cross of Jesus shows us just how cherished we are to You. Allow this truth to change and transform us from religion to a relationship with You. Through Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

From an article on some of the great hymns of the church, we learn about the hymn, “What a Friend we have in Jesus”:   In 1844 a young Irishman, Joseph Scriven, had completed his college education and returned home to marry his sweetheart. As he was traveling to meet her on the day before the planned wedding, he came upon a horrible scene—his beautiful fiancée tragically lying under the water in a creek bed after falling off her horse. "An optimist may see a light where there is none, but why must the pessimist always run to blow it out?" Many people often look at the negative side of life. President Reagan used to say that when people do this, it’s as if when you “give them a silver lining, they will find a cloud”. Of course, he was using the old saying “in every cloud, there is a silver lining” and reversing it to make a point. It is very important to be a “glass half full” kind of person. Looking for and expecting good things helps us to stay hope-filled. So, on this new day, be a positive person. Look for the good in everything. Look for hope in everything. Refuse to let yourselves dwell on the negative. Speak to others in inspirational ways, and you will find that your days will be better.
