2020 Daily Devotion - Day 259
Studies have shown if you blindfold a man and ask him to walk in a straight line, he will start out well but will soon begin to turn one way or another; looping around in ever tightening circles. It is a phenomenon which has been demonstrated over and over again; without a fixed reference point, we cannot keep a straight line.
The strange thing is it feels like we're walking in a straight line, however, we begin to loop and curve erratically – without ever knowing it. We need a fixed point to walk a straight line.
[Studies of this phenomenon appear in Chris McManus' book, Right Hand, Left Hand, The Origins of Asymmetry in Brains, Bodies, Atoms and Cultures (Phoenix, 2002).]
This can happen in life. There are so many forces pulling us in so many directions; it is essential for us to have a fixed point so we don’t walk in circles in our lives. Jesus Christ is meant to be our focus. The Apostle Paul found Jesus kept him moving straight ahead:
Philippians 1:21 ESV
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, in this season of Advent, help us to stay focused on Christ so our entire life will be engrossed in all that He is and offers to us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
