2020 Daily Devotion - Day 256
It's been said, “A student learns what his teacher knows, but a disciple becomes what his master is.”There is a great deal of truth in this quote. During this Advent season, we need to focus on this idea. We need to stop and ask ourselves, “Am I a customer or a disciple? I am making this distinction on purpose to help us process our own condition and outlook?”
In the life of the church, there are many who treat the ministry of the church like they, the parishioners, are customers. They want certain kinds of music and even specific programs in the church. They have many demands, and if not met, it will cause them to find another church. However, a disciple knows it is not about them. It is about the mission of the church (Matthew 28:18-20), whether or not the mission is being achieved, and how they can help to make it happen.
If being a disciple means we become like our teacher, we only need to look to Jesus to see what our outlook should be. He said He came not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for His lost creation. So, during Advent, what can we do to become more like Jesus?
Luke 6:40 ESV
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, as we live in a world where we are often customers, it is easy to become one at church. However, this is never Your desire. Help us to change and be transformed into being more like Jesus as opposed to being a customer. In His holy name. Amen.
Yours because of Him,
