2020 Daily Devotion - Day 246

Corrie Ten Boom in The Hiding Place relates an incident which taught her an important principle. She and her sister, Betsy, had just been transferred to the worst German prison camp they had seen yet; Ravensbrück.


Upon entering the barracks, they found them extremely overcrowded and flea-infested. Their Scripture reading that morning, in 1 Thessalonians, had reminded them to rejoice always, pray constantly, and give thanks in all circumstances. Betsy told Corrie to stop and thank the Lord for every detail of their new living quarters. Corrie at first flatly refused to give thanks for the fleas, but Betsy persisted. She finally succumbed.

During the months spent at that camp, they were surprised to find how openly they could hold Bible study and prayer meetings without guard interference. It was several months later when they learned that the guards would not enter the barracks because of the fleas.

Heavenly Father, as we enter this season of Thanksgiving, help us to remember to give You thanks in all of our circumstances; even the difficult ones. For You are good and Your steadfast love does endure forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

"An optimist may see a light where there is none, but why must the pessimist always run to blow it out?" Many people often look at the negative side of life. President Reagan used to say that when people do this, it’s as if when you “give them a silver lining, they will find a cloud”. Of course, he was using the old saying “in every cloud, there is a silver lining” and reversing it to make a point. It is very important to be a “glass half full” kind of person. Looking for and expecting good things helps us to stay hope-filled. So, on this new day, be a positive person. Look for the good in everything. Look for hope in everything. Refuse to let yourselves dwell on the negative. Speak to others in inspirational ways, and you will find that your days will be better.
