2020 Daily Devotion - Day 236

I think it was when I was about 15 years old, we lived down the street from the high school. There was a large lawn out in front, and one afternoon a pick-up football game got started. It was a mix of guys playing tackle football. At one point, the football got loose and went into the gutter and down the storm drain. Since it was the only football we had, we had to try to get it back or the game would be over. It was decided that someone should try to go down the storm drain and retrieve the ball. I got elected. I think it was unanimous. So, the plan was to tie a rope around my ankle, and I would start down the concrete tube (which wasn’t much bigger than I was) under the street. And if I didn’t find the ball, I was supposed to keep going – which I did. I finally reached the end of the tube and still did not find the ball. So now the plan was for me to be lowered down with the guys up top holding onto the rope. I was even given a flashlight so I could locate the ball. I was able to shine a light on the ball, but there was no way to reach it. The cavern under the street must have been twenty feet deep. So, they pulled on the rope, and brought me out of the abyss.

Even though I was unsuccessful, we came up with a plan B. The cavern under the street spilled out into the Los Angeles flood control river, which was at the end of the high school property. So, the plan for the next day was for a team of us to take our flashlights out on a rescue mission. We gathered at the entrance to the dried up LA River cavern and made our way into the massive cavity. Normally, there would be a substantial amount of water coming from all over the city into the flood control river through this cavity, but since it was summer, it was dry. After about thirty minutes of making our way in, we gave up due to the garbage and other unknown substances we were encountering. We were never able to retrieve that football.

Aren’t you glad God didn’t give up on all of us in His rescue mission? Instead, He never stopped working at retrieving us.

Luke 19:10 ESV
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

This is what He does. He keeps searching and searching for His lost creation. In order for us not to be lost, He will do anything, including coming Himself to die and be raised from the dead.

Pray with me:
Jesus, this is what You do. You seek and save the lost; all of us. We thank You for never giving up. In Your holy name. Amen.

Yours because of Him,
