2020 Daily Devotion - Day 221
I enjoy watching a TV show called “Storage Wars.” In this show, people are allowed to bid on what is in an abandoned storage unit, however, they cannot go inside and examine the contents. They are only allowed to stand outside of the unit for about five minutes to examine what’s inside. From this examination, they try to determine what the contents are worth. Many of the people who make bids own secondhand stores and are professionals. Sometimes they make a great deal of money and at other times, they make nothing.
In one episode, a buyer bought a unit in which there was a safe. He thought there could be something of great value in the safe, but when he opened it, there was nothing inside. He was complaining about this to others who were gathered at the event, and then someone told him the value was not in the contents of the safe, but the safe itself. Because of its age and good condition, it was worth a great deal of money which turned out to be the case.
God, too, has treasures in hidden places. Too often, we only look at life from a simplistic perspective. Many of us discount the Christian faith of having any value, and pursue power and materialism instead. Here is how Jesus explains it:
Matthew 13:44 ESV
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
This is what happens when our eyes are made open and we see the treasures of God in Christ Jesus. We want to give up everything else and buy the field. Perhaps you have been pursuing the wrong treasure. Take a closer look. The best treasure is Jesus.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, often times we are looking directly at the great treasures You offer and yet never see them. Open our eyes to see the eternal treasures we can have in You, through our Lord Jesus Christ in Whose name we pray. Amen.
