2020 Daily Devotion - Day 220
Ecclesiastes 7:10- 12
Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?”
For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.
Wisdom is good with an inheritance, an advantage to those who see the sun.
For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
In the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon writes a great deal about the need for wisdom in our lives.
In this passage, it begins by urging us not to look back and only focus on the “good old days”. Certainly, we can learn from the past and we should.
However, too many people are stuck in the past. As a result, they refuse to change, and life never gets any better. It is often important to “reinvent yourself”. Perhaps it is time to learn a new skill, so you are more competitive in the job market. If your family and/or marriage are in crisis, it might be time to seek help from a pastor or Christian counselor. It is easy to complain about current situations and compare them to the past, but growth comes when we live in the “now” and make the changes we need for our current situation.
He compares wisdom with having a great deal of money. Having a sufficient amount of money can bring a level of security and safety poverty cannot bring. Wisdom, Solomon says, is like this in many respects. He says, “Wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.” So how do we obtain wisdom?
One of the best ways in which we grow in wisdom is by having a “teachable spirit” and a hunger to learn; where we become disciplined in lifelong learning. Another step is to build all of our learning around the principles of God’s Word – the Bible. If we are not learning from that which comports with the scriptures, we will not be learning wisdom. Now is a perfect time to take new steps in growing in wisdom. What next step can you take?
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, there is no end to the wisdom You can give us. But we need a willing heart and a hungry mind to receive it. Give us a passion to learn wisdom based on Your Holy Word so we can be preserved and be made strong. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
