2020 Daily Devotion - Day 215

When you have children, you are changed forever. You can’t believe how much you can love another human being as when you hold your newborn baby. You want to do everything to protect this child. When I have had the very sad occasion to be with someone who has lost a child, I always make the comment that they would trade places in a heartbeat, and they always agree. And yet, I have also been with people when a child has been abandoned. It might be that a parent has simply left. It might be when a parent has been abusive in some way. It might be when a child feels abandoned, because of the addiction of a parent. And then there are times when a child has lost a parent or both parents through death. Often, when I deal with these children, they are now adults and the sting of some kind of abandonment is still with them.

But you don’t have to have had a parent leave in some form to feel abandoned. The events of our time might give you this sense. Maybe through the fear of contracting COVID-19, you have this sense of being forgotten and alone, or your job is threatened; or you have actually lost your job due to this pandemic, and you feel forsaken. Whatever it is, you need to hear God’s promise to you this day:

Psalm 27:10 ESV
For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.

God will keep this promise to you. Not only will He take you in and give you shelter, but He promises to “never leave you or forsake you”. As you begin this day, or if this is the end of the day and you’re about to go to sleep, do so with the knowledge God will keep this promise to you.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, there can be many reasons we can feel abandoned. Whatever they are, You have promised to never abandon us. Remind us of this great truth and promise today, and give us Your peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Yours because of Him,
Pastor John R. Steward
