2020 Daily Devotion - Day 214

One young person commenting on The Pandemic made the following statement, “My mom always told me I wouldn’t accomplish anything by lying in bed all day. But look at me now, Ma! I’m saving the world!”Having a purpose in life is very important, however I am not sure this qualifies. We were designed by God to be people of purpose and not just to sit around on the couch all day.

Proverbs 19:21 ESV
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

The challenge of having a purpose is it needs to be God’s purpose for our lives in order for it to be fulfilling. The Psalmist says we can have many ideas of our own as to what our purpose should be, but it is the ones which come from God “that will stand”. By this, the Psalmist is saying it is the purpose of God being fulfilled in our lives which will last and resist the passage of time. It is the purpose of God being fulfilled through us which will have lasting value.

Overall, the scriptures are speaking about having a purpose which fulfills God’s purpose in the world. What is God’s purpose for us? It all might be having a living relationship with Him and receiving salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. So, pray and ask God what you could do to have this kind of purpose; one which will stand.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, show us the Christ-centered purpose You have for our lives. Your Word tells us it cannot be merely one which does good things, but rather one which has the potential and the goal of bringing others into a saving relationship with Jesus. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Yours because of Him,
