2020 Daily Devotion - Day 192
One of the most important ways to prepare for Holy Communion is through confession and repentance. Here is how the Apostle Paul put it:
I Corinthians 11:27-30
Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
Eating of the bread and drinking of the cup in Holy Communion in an “unworthy manner” simply means to do so with an un-repentant heart. We need to do some self-examination using God’s Word. When we discover the areas of our lives where we are not living according to His will, repentance means not only are we sorry, but we will work to change those areas of our lives.
In addition, we learn from this passage that Holy Communion is more than a symbol. If those who are not in a process of repentance eat of the Sacrament, they can become ill. How much more for those who eat and drink of it in repentance will experience blessing?
On Saturday, October 3 at 5:00pm in our live courtyard service, we invite you to join us for Holy Communion. For those watching online, we invite you to use your own bread and wine/grape juice and participate with us as well. Come and taste and see that the Lord is good.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This is one more way in which You reach down from heaven to touch our lives. Do a new work in us through Your bread and cup. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
