2020 Daily Devotion - Day 155

Many years ago, I was coming back to the church office after Pastor Jim Reynen and I had lunch together. He was riding with me, and just as we got close to the church office I ran out of gas. I could sense it the minute it happened, because the power steering failed. However, even though I had run out of gas, we kept coasting and I was able to make a left turn into the church office parking lot and into a parking stall. The reason I ran out of gas was because I had placed a reminder note to do something on the dashboard and it covered the gas gauge. I was running out of gas and didn’t even realize it.

I think this can happen in life. We get so busy and have so many things on our minds that we don’t realize we, too, are running on empty.

Luke 10:38-42 ESV
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, often we become so busy we forget about the really important things. And then, when challenges come our way, we run out of gas. Help us to be more like Mary and be willing to sit at Your feet and learn from You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Yours because of Him,
Pastor John R. Steward
Senior Pastor
Mount of Olives Church
