2020 Daily Devotion - Day 137
In Matthew chapter 10, Jesus is addressing the issue of fear. He tells his followers to have no fear. And then He explains why:
Matthew 10:29-31 ESV
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
So many times, people think God has more important things to do than to be concerned with their situation. And yet, He is concerned. Jesus says since God knows when a sparrow falls to the ground, He knows what is going on in your life. In fact, He even knows how many hairs there are on the top of your head. And for some of us, this is easier for God than for others. So, in the moment when we are afraid and worry God has forgotten us, remember the sparrow. Perhaps, it was the inspiration of the song Civilla Martin wrote in 1905.
His Eye is on the Sparrow by Cirilla Martin
1. Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
2. “Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
3. Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, it is such good news to know if Your eye is on the sparrow, we know You are watching us as well. Whatever we are facing right now, You have not forgotten us and will see us through. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
