2020 Daily Devotion - Day 124
When people get stuck in religion, they often do not really know how to pray. In these situations, the only time they pray is when they are in church and the pastor is the one praying. One of the reasons people fail to pray is, they compare themselves to the pastors. And in the back of their minds, they think they cannot be as eloquent. In addition, they think the pastors; because of their devotion to God, have a direct line to God. There are others reasons I am sure, but these should not be the reasons we do not pray. There are no reasons, in fact, why we should not pray. Jesus encountered the same situation in His day, and here is what He says about it.
Matthew 6:7-8 NRSV
“When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
So, praying is not about the words you use. It is not about how articulate and lofty you might sound. God simply wants to hear your heart. Therefore, today, just start the day with a conversation with Him like you would a good friend. Tell Him the burdens you carry. Tell Him the concerns that you have, and you will find it is the best way to begin your day.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, You love to hear us come to You in prayer. You are never concerned about the words we use because you just want to hear from our hearts. Help us to just have a simple conversation with You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
