2020 Daily Devotion - Day 97

As you study the Bible, you discover that much of the history of God’s people has been a history of people on the move. In the Old Testament, we read about the children of Israel who were set free from captivity in Egypt, and then led by God to the Promised Land. He provided for all of their needs along the way. He provided this dew like food that fell to the ground during the night called Mana. They couldn’t store it up for the next day, for it would only go rotten if they did. Each day there was enough, and God always provided it to them. They were led in the day by a pillar of clouds, and at night by a pillar of fire in the sky. In this way, they were able to travel by both day and night. God led them to a certain location – a land He had prepared for them. During this journey, they were sometimes afraid, and at other times disobedient. But through it all, God led them to the land He had prepared and promised.

In some ways, we have been on a similar journey. We are headed to a new day. We are headed to a destination that God has prepared for us. We will look back in the years ahead, and see His hand guiding us through all we have been facing. We will see that He has not taken His eyes off of us. Get ready, for a new day is coming.

Psalm 32:8 ESV
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, it is so comforting to know that You are leading us. You have a destination for us. We will not be abandoned to ourselves, for You have a plan. Give us strength in knowing that You are guiding our every step. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

John 15:15 NRS I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. From an article on some of the great hymns of the church, we learn about the hymn, “What a Friend we have in Jesus”:   In 1844 a young Irishman, Joseph Scriven, had completed his college education and returned home to marry his sweetheart. As he was traveling to meet her on the day before the planned wedding, he came upon a horrible scene—his beautiful fiancée tragically lying under the water in a creek bed after falling off her horse. Later, Scriven moved to Canada and eventually fell in love again, only to experience devastation once more when she became ill and died just weeks before their marriage. 2021 Daily Devotion - Day 463

We have come to the end of our daily devotionals at this time. Our prayer is that they have helped you during the challenges we have faced in dealing with COVID-19. With life starting to return to some of the old normal, I thought it might be good, in this last devotional, to spend a little time examining what this period can mean for our lives. What are some of the lessons learned? We have learned many lessons. We have learned that too often in the past, we have taken many things for granted. We have seen the value of Christian Community. We have found ways to be together which was vital. We were able to spend more time with our families, especially our children, which was a blessing. And as we did, we were able to teach them more about the need to be patient and what “delayed gratification” looks like.
