2020 Daily Devotion - Day 82

Micah was a Prophet who lived about 20 miles southwest of Jerusalem. He was most likely a peasant farmer by trade. His prophetic work covers the span of three kings from 738 to 698 BC.

In his prophesy, he proclaims the Lord’s judgement upon Israel and Judah. In chapter seven from the book of Micah, he describes his despair and most likely the despair of the people, especially the poor. He says he feels like when the summer fruit has been gathered or there is “no first-ripe fig which my soul desires”. In other words, he is describing the feeling of running out of energy and resources. He goes on to describe the scene where evil seems to be triumphant, and righteousness is being defeated.

Some might say it sounds like the time in which we are currently living. With being quarantined in our homes and the loss of jobs, it is like we are at the end of the harvest and we are weary. With the suffocation of a black man in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by a police officer and then riots and looting in the streets, we too might think evil is victorious, and righteousness is being conquered.

But then Micah says these words in the midst of his despair:

Micah 7:7 ESV
But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, we are not the first people to be stretched to the limit. As this has happened so many times in the past, it is difficult to imagine and recount. But just as the Prophet Micah found hope in You, we ask that You would do the same in us. In the tragedies we see, remind us that You are still in charge and You are our salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Yours because of Him,
