2020 Daily Devotion - Day 48
The poetry of Robert Frost has always been a blessing to me. The imagery he creates causes great contemplation. Certainly, this is true with the poem, “The Road Not Taken.” He wrote it based on real life experiences, walking with his friend and fellow poet, Edward Thomas. It seems, Robert Frost often had a difficult time choosing which path to travel.
“The Road Not Taken” By Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Sometimes we have trouble deciding which road to travel in life, and we have never been on the Coronavirus road. As we experience this new road, we come to many moments where we need to choose – will I go down the path of fear, or the road of faith and hope in the living God?
Once this is over, there will be new roads and new choices. It will be easy to go back to the way we have always lived; to conform to the world; to simply do what everyone else does. But Jesus is calling us to a different way. He calls it a narrow way – to follow Him on the narrow way of Discipleship. What will this look like? Perhaps, it looks like joining a Small Group. Perhaps, it’s going on a Cursillo weekend. Maybe it will be to begin serving Jesus in some capacity. He promises that when you do, you will discover Life – the Abundant Life, filled with meaning and purpose.
Matthew 7:13 -14
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Pray with me:
Lord Jesus, help us to join You on the narrow road – the road many will not take. But this will be the road that “makes all the difference”. In Your Holy name. Amen.
