2020 Daily Devotion - Day 14
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:58 RSV
When I was a boy growing up in Tarzana, California, my mother went across the street to visit Mrs. Spangler. I went along because Mrs. Spangler had a dog in the front yard that I could play with. At the time, I had no idea how much I would learn from Mrs. Spangler’s dog. While my mother was inside visiting, I started to play with this dog. There was a rope lying on the ground, so I dangled it in front of the dog; then he grabbed it with his teeth and wouldn’t let go. I pulled and pulled but he would not let go. Finally, I started to pull sideways, left to right and right to left, but he still would not let go. Before I knew it, the dog was airborne and I was going around in circles, not knowing what to do next. I knew I couldn’t let go of the rope because then the poor dog would go flying and get hurt, so we kept going in circles, until finally, I was able to bring the dog in for a “four paw landing”. At this point, I let go of the rope but the dog never did. I learned from Mrs. Spangler’s dog to never give up.
This is what the Apostle Paul is saying to us in I Corinthians 15:58 – be Steadfast. It simply means never give up. I watch so many people give up too soon in so many aspects of their lives. One of the keys to success is to never give up. One of the keys to getting through these challenging days is again – to never give up.
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, we see that You never give up. You are constantly providing for our lives. You are constantly giving us Your grace. So when those moments come – when we think we can’t take another step, remind us to never give up and Your grace will carry us through. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
